Question - Social Networking and Insurance...Do They Mix?

Hello, PICA Members and Friends!

One of your colleagues wants to know:

"How does your company feel about allowing agents to use Facebook as a marketing tool? Do you have guidelines to offer if they choose to do this?"

And

"Does your company have a Facebook page? Do you have guidelines you can share?"

If you have thoughts on this, please leave them in the comments section...

Thanks!

-Kirsten

Hi! My company does not have a social networking procedure or guideline in place.

Most of our agents have professionally done Web sites. They use those sites and paper mailings and advertisements to market their agencies and services. Right now, I feel that Facebook and Myspace are considered too casual/trendy to address the seriousness of insurance/finanacial services. Plus, imagine the disclaimers they'd have to include by the time our legal departments got through reviewing them!

Hope this helps...

We are just in the beginning stages of exploring various "social media" websites such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.

I did just see a report today that Twitter actually had a decrease in users over the past month and have heard some who think it's more of a fad than a trend - i.e., it will be played out like your old Pet Rock in about six months.

My own personal thought is that if you do Twitter, it better be a timely hint or else clever, otherwise who is going to sign up to see an insurance commercial when you don't have to?
